HISTORY:
The MINESHAFT was a members-only gay leather bar and sex club located at 835 Washington Street, at Little West 12th Street, in Manhattan, New York City, in the Meatpacking District, West Village, and Greenwich Village. The MINESHAFT became ‘infamous’ in no small part due by the drawings and posters from artist REX. Amongst those who frequented the Mineshaft were Jack Fritscher, American author and editor of Drummer Magazine (who was present at its opening night and attended hundreds of times), and the bar was also frequented by other notable celebrities such as Vincente Minnelli, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Rock Hudson.

The MINESHAFT was a notorious den of immoral behaviour, with an upper floor that had a roof deck, dungeons, slings, and cans of Crisco, at the time popular among gay men as a sexual lubricant preceding modern personal lubricant. Nudity or minimal clothing was encouraged, and a clothes check was provided. According to the Mineshaft Newsletter, Red Hankie groups held meetings there. There was a wall of glory holes. Promiscuity was celebrated.

The images and posters for the club were created by the ‘infamous’ celebrated gay erotic artist Rex.

The existence of the Mineshaft was widely known among gays who never visited; it has been described as a “mythical…gay space”. The Mineshaft operated from October 8, 1976 until it was closed by the New York City Department of Health on November 7, 1985.
